This week RMIT University launched a new PhD scholarship opportunity:  PhD Scholarship in Higher Education Research

This scholarship is being offered in the area of higher education research with the aim of investigating the PhD and labour market outcomes of doctoral graduates with a focus on digital and other forward looking industries.

We are particularly interested in studies which provide an evidence base to contribute to current debates on the value of the PhD and its relevance to careers outside the academy.

The successful candidate may choose to explore one of the following or related issues:

  1. the participation of PhD graduates in rapidly changing industries associated with digitisation;
  2. the experience of PhD graduates employed in “cross-over” industries (i.e. not directly related to their field of research);
  3. the perceptions of employers about the ‘value added’ by PhD graduates in the workplace;
  4. PhD graduates’ experiences of labour markets beyond the academy and how well their doctoral research education prepared them for these roles.

Possible lines of inquiry include investigating the views and experiences of employers, graduates and other stakeholders through ethnographic or related techniques.

This PhD position is open to researchers with a range of disciplinary backgrounds.

We investigate how people experience the digital in everyday life, By researching from the ground up we bring fresh insight to a constantly changing world. The Digital Ethnography Research Centre DERC focuses on understanding a contemporary world where digital and mobile technologies are increasingly inextricable from the environments and relationships in which everyday life plays out. DERC excels in both academic scholarship and in our applied work with external partners from industry and other sectors.
